Millions of Americans have read works of literature, from The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass to Beloved that attempt to portray life under slavery. But only a few people alive today have heard the actual voices of men and women who experienced those dark days firsthand. Now, for the first time, historic recordings of former slaves recounting their own experiences of slavery are made available to the American public in Remembering Slavery. Early in the 1930s, interviewers from the Federal Writers' Project combed the South in search of former slaves. The interviewers spoke with hundreds of elderly people about their experiences in slavery and preserved the voices of some on primitive recording devices. The recordings were placed in the Library of Congress and have never been heard by the wider public. Now, remastered using state-of-the-art equipment, the recordings offer the only known opportunity to hear the voices of former slaves. This groundbreaking book-and-tape package of interviews and transcripts includes more than a dozen of the only known original recordings of people who actually experienced enslavement. They remember relationships between master and slave; survival techniques in the face of hardship; family life, marriage, and childhood under slavery; experiences behind Confederate and Union lines during the Civil War; and, finally, the coming of freedom. Dramatic readings by prominent African Americans of untaped interviews complement the incomparable recordings, to create a full, firsthand picture of African American life before Emancipation. The reading and the primary source recordings edited by Smithsonian Productions will be broadcast nationally on public radio in the fall of 1998.

"Though these four works are clearly related to the anti-Pelagian works of Augustine, they do not themselves directly deal with the Pelagians. Rather, they reply to a series of problems which various Catholic monks of Africa and Gaul found with Augustine s doctrine of grace and predestination.

The first two works, Grace and Free Choice and Rebuke and Grace, respond to the problems at Hadrumetum where a group of monks thought that Augustine s teaching on grace destroyed free choice and human merits and eliminated the possibility of anyone, but especially of a monastic superior, giving rebukes and exhortations.

The second two works, The Predestination of the Saints and The Gift of Perseverance, reply to the letters of Prosper of Aquitaine and Hilary, a devoted disciple of Augustine who is known only by this letter to Augustine. These ardent supporters of Augustine reported to him the objections which stemmed from various persons in monastic groups in Gaul who admitted that the grace of God is not given on the basis of any good works, but held that our initial will to believe should not to be included among such good works. Hence, they held that the beginning of faith and the initiative for salvation came from the human will. These monks also rejected Augustine s doctrine that divine predestination and the grace of final perseverance are utterly gratuitous gifts of God.

Since the four works in this volume were written in response to two similar, but different problems in two different geographical areas, the introduction deals first with the two works written for the monks at Hadrumetum and then with the two works written for the monks of Provence."

The book, divided into specific historic eras, includes such personalities as bodybuilder Charles Atlas; pioneer weightlifter Eugene Sandow; movie stars like Steve "Hercules" Reeves and Johnny "Tarzan" Weismuller; and publications such as the 1920s-era magazine Physical Culture and the 1950s-era comic book Mr. Muscles. It also touches on the use of masculine, homoerotic imagery to sell political and military might (including American recruitment posters and Nazi propaganda from the 1936 Olympics), and how companies have used buff, near-naked men to sell products from laundry detergent to sacks of flour since the 1920s. The introduction by David L. Chapman offers insightful information on individual images, while the essay by Brett Josef Grubisic places the work in its proper historical context.
